Durban Promenade Screen

For this Durban promenade project, we specified and delivered an outdoor LED screen structure with control integration for a busy visitor precinct. The install had to stand up to coastal air, heavy foot traffic and tight municipal timing, while staying clear and readable in daylight.

A public-facing screen for constant movement

The brief came from a public-sector client in Durban that needed a large-format outdoor screen for announcements, visitor information and live campaign content in a high-traffic promenade setting. The screen had to be visible from a wide approach zone, work in bright coastal light, and sit neatly within a precinct where people move fast and gatherings can change by the hour.

We started with site surveys, viewing angles and service access checks. The client needed a solution that would work for daily public use, with enough output for daytime viewing and a structure that could take wind loading near the coast. The project also needed a practical maintenance plan, because a screen in a busy precinct has to be serviced quickly without closing the whole area.

What made the site difficult

The promenade brought several constraints. Salt in the air meant every exposed component needed careful material selection and protective finishing. The installation zone had limited working hours because of pedestrians, deliveries and nearby events. We also had to coordinate with municipal requirements, so the screen position, structural base and electrical routing were checked against local approval conditions before fabrication began.

There was no room for guesswork. The structure had to be stable, the access hatches needed to be reachable for technicians, and the screen controller had to be placed where it could be managed without interrupting the public-facing operation. Any glare, overhang or poor cable route would have become a problem very quickly in this environment.

  • Coastal exposure and corrosion control
  • Daylight readability in a bright outdoor precinct
  • Pedestrian safety during rigging and commissioning
  • Municipal sign-off and electrical coordination

Specification, fabrication and control integration

We handled signage strategy, material specification, structural coordination and LED screen integration as one package. The structure was fabricated for outdoor use with a steel support frame, protective coatings and access provisions for maintenance. The display itself was configured as a high-brightness LED video screen suitable for outdoor public messaging, with control equipment integrated into a secure enclosure.

Our fabrication team managed the sign body and mounting elements, while our project engineer worked through load transfer, fixing details and cable routes. We also prepared the handover documents so the client’s operators could manage content, reboot the system if needed and follow a sensible maintenance routine. The result was a screen that did not feel like a bolt-on feature, it sat properly in the precinct and worked as part of the space.

  • Outdoor LED video screen with high-brightness output
  • Fabricated steel support structure with corrosion protection
  • Integrated control cabinet and signal routing
  • Access for servicing without major disruption

A tight programme from drawing board to switch-on

The full programme ran for 8 weeks from site survey to commissioning. Week one covered survey, measurements and stakeholder alignment. Weeks two and three were spent on design development, structural checks and approval support. Fabrication took place in weeks four and five, with the frame, fixings and enclosure components prepared off site. The final two weeks covered delivery, rigging, alignment, power-up and content testing.

That schedule worked because we kept the client informed at each stage and brought the right people into the same conversation early. Leanne managed the programme flow, Sakhile handled the engineering interface, Riaan supervised fabrication, and Omolemo coordinated the site rigging. It kept the job moving and reduced the kind of delays that usually happen when different contractors are working from different assumptions.

Results for the visitor precinct

Once live, the screen gave the precinct a strong public information point that could be updated quickly for events, notices and campaigns. The display was readable in daylight and the structure sat cleanly within the site without crowding pedestrian routes. For a location that has constant movement, that matters as much as the screen itself.

The client also gained a system that is easier to plan around. With the correct access points and a documented maintenance approach, routine checks can be done before problems build up. That reduces downtime and helps the screen stay useful through busy seasons, long weekends and the heavier footfall that comes with Durban tourism.

  • Clearer communication at point of entry
  • Better visibility for public notices and event content
  • Improved serviceability for ongoing operation
  • A durable installation suited to coastal conditions

What we would repeat on the next coastal screen

If we were doing this type of project again, we would keep the same process: early site survey, proper structural review, and a maintenance plan written before fabrication starts. In Durban, the extra time spent on corrosion protection and access planning always pays off later. It avoids last minute patches and keeps the installation looking right, not tired after the first wet season.

For promoters, municipalities and developers working in busy coastal areas, the lesson is simple. A screen is only as good as the structure, control system and service plan behind it. Get those pieces right from the start and the screen becomes a reliable communication tool, not a problem waiting to happen.

Deep3 Signage Consultants continues to specify, build and rig signage and LED screens for public-facing sites across Gauteng and further afield, including Durban, with the same practical approach we used here.

Questions we get asked

Can you handle LED screen projects in coastal areas like Durban?

Yes. We plan for salt air, wind loading, access for maintenance and the approval process before fabrication begins.

Do you only work in Johannesburg?

No. Our base is in Modderfontein, Johannesburg, but we specify, build and rig signage and LED screens across Gauteng and other parts of Africa.

Can you support the full project, from survey to handover?

Yes. We cover surveys, specification, fabrication management, installation management, LED screen integration and project handover.
